Chalk heart

A coming-of-age novel about the eighties, co-written with Stephan Falk.
2023, 2nd edition, Eifeler Literaturverlag

A novel about first love, endless parties, great music, and boundless freedom—with plenty of 1980s music! Do you remember? Chalk hearts melting on a playground wall. (Kayleigh, Marillion) The scent of sunscreen and straw mats on a summer day at the outdoor pool, the first parties in the barn or watching football on Saturday nights at the village pub, shy conversations on the parents' landline phone, dance lessons with ladies' choice and sweaty, pimply partners, hitchhiking together to the Rolling Disco show in the next town, or soaking new jeans in the hot bath—anyone who remembers this definitely experienced their youth in the 1980s. Juliana and Markus are experiencing what is probably the most carefree time of their lives. In August 1986, the summer holidays in the Eifel region are still going strong, and for them, yawn-inducing days are as much a part of summer in the countryside as unbridled recklessness and the tingling feeling of butterflies in their stomachs. The legendary songs of the era are always a part of the experience, played from the jukebox, cassette recorder, self-recorded tapes, or Walkman. Together with their friends, they experience all sorts of things: the boundless freedom of riding mopeds and motorbikes, exciting trips to Cologne, hours of making out in public, the Dr. Sommer advice columns in BRAVO magazine, carnival celebrations and alcohol poisoning, suspected pregnancies and parsley, secret driving practice in the lava pit, air fresheners dangling from the rearview mirror, the eighteenth birthday or the May Day dance party, all while juggling high school and driving tests, their own band's first gig, and a chalk heart drawn on the street… Life couldn't be more exciting! Regine Brühl and Stephan Falk, who themselves belonged to the rural youth movement, alternate in the roles of Juliana and Markus. The novel CHALK HEART is not just a fast-paced love story with big dreams, first heartbreak, and many hopes—it also revives memories of a time with countless great songs. In retrospect, much of it sounds nostalgic, but they were also "the best days of my life." Hardly any other decade was as carefree and musically diverse as the 1980s. Almost a hundred songs are woven into the story and express the feelings and emotions of the young protagonists. The playlist is included at the end of the book. A novel for everyone who remembers the 1980s, experienced their youth in the countryside, or anyone who wants to understand why this time was so carefree and wonderful.

Timber-frame murder

A Münstereifel crime novel

2018, Rhein-Mosel-Verlag

Inga Meyer falls instantly in love with the old half-timbered house on the market square. There, she wants to fulfill her dream of owning a bookstore. She buys the building and enthusiastically begins its renovation – only to stumble upon a dark secret meant to remain hidden forever. The clues reach back from the present day to the time of the Nazi regime. Captivated, Inga Meyer embarks on a quest that poses serious dangers for her. Author Regine Brühl takes her readers on a thrilling journey into a dark era. She skillfully interweaves the contemporary crime story with the diary of Anna Katz. This provides the reader with a detailed glimpse into the life of a vibrant young woman in the 1930s who, according to the Nazis' racial ideology, was considered half-Jewish. Against the backdrop of the increasingly rigid exclusion of Jewish citizens in Germany, a forbidden love blossoms: For the Nazis, Anna Katz's relationship is racial defilement—and to make matters worse, the man she loves is trapped in a loveless marriage. Regine Brühl conducted extensive research for her debut novel. She vividly portrays the life of a young woman who is robbed of her happiness, not least by the circumstances of the time. Münstereifel, a small Rhenish town during the Nazi era, comes alive in the reader's mind. The novel offers fascinating insights into daily life and festivities during that period. The plot, centered around fictional characters, is interwoven with a host of real people who appear as perpetrators, victims, bystanders, and innocent bystanders. Of particular interest is the encounter with David Kaufmann, a native of Münstereifel who emigrated to the USA and saved around 200 Jews during the Third Reich by facilitating their emigration to the United States. Readers also experience modern Bad Münstereifel with its numerous shops and charming restaurants and cafés. If one didn't know better, it would be hard to believe that the evil spirit of National Socialism once raged even in this romantic little town on the Erft River. Although the two women – Inga Meyer and Anna Katz – live or lived in different eras, they share some fundamental character traits. Inga Meyer is so deeply affected by Anna Katz's fate that the young woman does everything in her power to shed light on the mystery, even if it puts herself and her relationship with Max in considerable danger.
